Mental Health Family Resource Centre

British Columbia Schizophrenia Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 by families and friends of people with schizophrenia. Since then, BCSS has grown into a province-wide family support system. We are dedicated to supporting each other, educating the public, raising funds for research and advocating for better services for people with schizophrenia and other serious and persistent mental illness.

Services Provided:

  • Free support and information for individuals (family & friends) who support someone who may have or has been diagnosed with a mental illness
  • Free handouts, books and videos to borrow on a variety of mental illnesses
  • Free education for family members & friends through the Strengthening Families Together Program
  • Free support groups for family & friends
  • Free education for community groups through our Partnership Education Program or talks on specific subjects related to mental illness

Usual office hours: Monday to Thursday 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Walk-in hours: Walk in hours are 9am -4pm Monday to Thursday however we recommend an appointment as staff often work out in the community during regular hours.

Referral criteriaOur services are for families, caregivers and friends of a loved one with any mental illness. A diagnosis is not required to access our services. The individual with the diagnosis of mental illness can be under 19 and the family can still receive these services. All of our services are free and people can self-refer.
How to applyClients can self-refer or be referred by another community agency / health worker (for example). Anyone can refer a family / caregiver to the program. For individuals self-referring, please contact our office via phone or email; for community partners, please call and or fill out a referral form to scan and email or fax the form to our office.

Strengthening Families Together Strengthening Families Together is a free 6 session course for families, friends and caregivers who have a loved one living with any mental illness, a diagnosis is not required. This course is held in person and open to families anywhere in the Northwest region. Our next SFT program will be starting on April 8th, 2025.
